Automated Meter Reading (AMR)

What is Automated Meter Reading (AMR)?

AMR is based on new technology that enables gas consumption to be monitored with a greater degree of accuracy and granularity than previously available. This is achieved by installing a separate AMR unit in addition to the existing meter to record consumption data which is then transmitted to WINGAS.

How could it benefit you?
  • Provides accurate meter reads for invoicing each month.
  • Provides improved data to help procure gas and optimise its use more effectively, for example users are able to drill down into daily consumption patterns.
  • Provides evidence for energy savings & environmental credits.
  • Meets legal requirements from 2014.

Why is AMR so important?
  • The 1986 Gas Act and the Department of Trade & Industry’s 2007 White Paper on Energy outlined mandatory requirements and timescales for the installation of AMR.
  • AMR must be installed in all businesses with an annual consumption greater than 732,000 kWh’s that are not daily metered before April 2014.

WINGAS and AMR

WINGAS are currently testing AMR at a number of different sites to ensure the data provided is reliable and can be made available for downloading and analysis by users through our dedicated Web Portal in the second half of 2011.  Please keep checking our website for updates in the meantime.

Alternatively if you have any questions about AMR or you would like to register your interest please contact Rob Johnson, our Site Works & MPR Portfolio Manager, on +44 (0)20 8439 9686.

For reference this is a link to the Gas Act of 1986.  Sections 12.2 – 12.25 deal with AMR:
